Coordinating Pre-Start Meetings
A primary responsibility of a supervisor is the co-ordination of pre-start meetings.
During these meetings, supervisors guide the team through their assigned tasks for the day or shift. Setting a positive example and encouraging active participation from the team is essential when discussing tasks, work zones, and associated risks. Encourage the team to seek guidance from you if any uncertainties arise.
When assigning tasks to the crews, nominate the operators who will be performing the field verifications.
A team member adds the appropriate risk icons to the task.
TIP: Encouraging active participation from the team will assist the supervisor to determine each operator's comprehension and understanding surrounding the risks and control measures.
NOTE: Instruct operators to open the verification checklists on their Forwood One app during the meeting, and double-check that they understand how to complete a verification.
Performing Supervisor CRM Verifications
After concluding the pre-start meeting and any necessary pre-checks the teams will move to the work areas.
As a supervisor, you will conduct your own CRM verification at the work area with a focus on ensuring that all critical controls are in place. The supervisor’s and operator’s questions are essentially the same, providing a double-check that critical controls are correctly established.
This second check provides assurance that critical controls have not been overlooked and are truly effective before work continues.
Select the Supervisor Verification option in the App.
Fill out the task and work area details.
Complete all yes-or-no questions.
IMPORTANT: If any response is "No", work must be stopped immediately until the necessary measures are in place.
Document remedial actions taken in the comments field against non-compliant question/s. Attach photos as supporting evidence.
Work may only resume once the critical control is implemented, verified, and effective.
Providing coaching for operators
Offer guidance and support to operators as they learn to complete their verification checklists accurately. Encourage them to ask questions and be sure to give them the correct information.
Make sure the operators are:
Completing their CRM verifications correctly
Understanding that work stops if they identify a "No" on their checklists.
Supervisors should coach operators to understand the purpose of each critical control, recognize when a control is missing or ineffective, and record accurate comments when a “No” response is selected.
Ensuring critical controls are in place
As a supervisor, it is your responsibility to address missing or inadequate critical controls promptly. Whether it involves minor tasks or complex issues, prioritize fatality prevention by halting work until controls are implemented.
Collaborate with your team to resolve any identified issues and document all actions taken in the Forwood One app. By demonstrating CRM leadership and prioritizing safety, you contribute to the overall success of the CRM system.
